Subtitling Game of Thrones

The American fictional series Game of Thrones is a cultural phenomenon that has held almost half of the world’s population in a titillating spell.

Though in its final season, fans and movie enthusiasts are still raving from the masterful delivery of a storyline that’s both intriguing, full of suspense, and packed-full with action.

However, for non-native English speakers who barely understand the language, the drama, suspense and thrill of the movie can be lost on them.

But that doesn’t have to be the case. You can also get immersed in this world-acclaimed series, enjoy every moment, revel in the brilliance of the casts, and of course, live every moment of the power play just as a native English speaker would.

The trick to this though is to watch the movie with subtitles. But, there’s a snag here – how do you get a GOT movie with subtitles in your language?

First, before answering that, let’s take a look at what subtitles are exactly?

Do you remember those line of texts on your screen when watching movies? Those lines of text that appear when an actor speaks are subtitles.

Now that’s out of the way, let’s get to how you can add a subtitle to a Game of Thrones movie or any other movie for that matter.

Thankfully, there are a couple of ways to add subtitles to a movie. You can either overlay the subtitles during playbacks or burn the subtitles into the video file.

Let’s go over each method in detail:

Overlay Subtitles during playbacks

So, let’s say you have the movie you’d like to add a subtitle on your laptop. And you also have a VLC Media Player installed.

You can manually add the subtitle or automatically overlay it on the video.

Automatic Subtitle overlay

First, be sure that both files that are, the video and subtitle files are named the same. For instance, if the movie file is: gotses3ep1.mp4 the subtitle file should be named: gotses3ep1.srt

Finally, ensure that both the video and subtitle files are saved in the same folder. The media player in this case VLC would look in the same folder for any subtitle file and play it together.

Manual Subtitle Overlay

In a situation where you have multiple subtitle files, or they were saved on a different folder from the video you can use the manual subtitle overlay to get the media player to show the text.

To do that, use the menu option, then the select subtitle, then add a subtitle file. Browse through your files to select your preferred subtitle. Or you can drag and drop the subtitle file on the media player once the video has loaded.

Burn Subtitles into Video files

Handbrake an open-source, free, multi-platform program is a handy tool you can use to burn the subtitle file directly into the video data.

Simply launch the program select the video you want as the Source, then switch to Subtitles tab, select Add external SRT, select and add the subtitle file you want.

Note though; you can choose to turn the Forced Only mode on or off. If you decide to leave the Forced Only mode on, you’ll burn the subtitles directly into the video file. However, turning it off embeds the caption a separate file.

So, there you have it. With these steps, you can add a subtitle to your GOT movies.
