The FC Barcelona Anthem: “El Cant del Barça”
Like many football clubs, FC Barcelona fans like a good sing-along! The joyful, ‘El Cant del Barça’ (The hymn of FC Barcelona) is the FC Barcelona anthem. In Barcelona’s famous stadium, Camp Nou, fans will sing the club anthem in unison before, and often during, every match!
The song was written in 1974, as part of Barcelona’s 75th Anniversary Celebrations. The lyrics are by Jaume Picas and Josep M. Espinàs. Espinàs is a Catalan writer and journalist, mostly known for his travel writing. Picas was a popular Catalan actor, and director. Manuel Valls i Gorina, a renown Catalan composer and also a Professor of Music at the University of Barcelona, composed the music.
‘El Cant del Barça’ was first introduced to the fans on November 27, 1974. As part of the Club’s 75th Anniversary celebrations, a choir of 3,500 voices conducted by Oriol Martorell, performed it for the very first time.
The hymn reminds us of the open and integrating character of the club: “No matter where we come from, South or North, […] A flag brings us together.”
